Pujya Swamiji Shares Message of “Annam Brahma” on World Food Safety Day

“The food that reaches our plate should be safe, clean, and nutritious. Food safety is not only a matter of health but also of service, compassion, and social responsibility. Safe food is the right of every individual, and a hunger-free world is the responsibility of humanity.” – HH Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji

On the occasion of World Food Safety Day, Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswati Ji called upon humanity to respect food not merely as an object of consumption, but as God’s sacred gift and the very foundation of life. He emphasized that food safety is not only a health issue, but is also deeply connected to human dignity, social justice, environmental balance, and spiritual values.

Pujya Swamiji said that in Indian culture, food is regarded as a manifestation of the Divine. The declaration “Annam Brahma” (food is divine) in our scriptures is not merely a phrase but a complete philosophy of life. Food not only provides physical nourishment but also influences our consciousness, thoughts, and values. Therefore, the purity, safety, and availability of food are fundamental rights of every individual.

Expressing concern, he noted that while millions of tons of food are wasted globally every year, millions of people continue to suffer from hunger and malnutrition. This is not merely an issue of economic or social inequality, but one of compassion and collective responsibility. No matter how much abundance we possess, we cannot consider ourselves fully prosperous while others around us go to bed hungry.

Pujya Swamiji stated that World Food Safety Day reminds us that food should be safe, hygienic, and nutritious. Contaminated and unsafe food not only causes disease but also affects the productivity and development of society. Ensuring food safety requires the collective participation of governments, industries, farmers, consumers, and civil society.

He further said that hunger and malnutrition continue to remain serious challenges in many countries around the world. At such a time, we must work together to reduce food waste, promote locally grown and nutritious food, and ensure that quality food reaches those in need. We must replace the culture of wasting food with a culture of sharing food.

Pujya Swamiji also highlighted the deep connection between food safety and the environment. Without protecting land, water, biodiversity, and natural resources, it will not be possible to ensure food security for future generations. Sustainable agriculture, water conservation, and the balanced use of natural resources are the need of the hour.

He urged young people to cultivate gratitude for food, prevent food waste, and come forward to help those in need. Even small efforts made by individuals can significantly reduce the challenges of hunger and food insecurity.

Pujya Swamiji concluded by saying, “Food is not merely nourishment; it is a divine blessing. Respect food, receive it as sacred prasad, and prevent its wastage. What is on our plate is not just our privilege but the shared heritage of all humanity. Let us create a world where no one goes to bed hungry and where safe, nutritious food reaches every person with dignity.”
